So, What Is ABA?
ABA stands for Applied Behavior Analysis. It’s a therapy based on science that focuses on increasing helpful behaviors, teaching new skills, and reducing behaviors that may get in the way of learning, communication, or social interactions.
ABA can look different depending on each child’s needs, but it should always includes:
- Individualized goals
- Positive reinforcement
- A team approach involving trained professionals
Stick around for future blogs where we’ll talk more about what ABA looks like in action, who’s on the team, common goals, and more.
You're Considering ABA. Now What?
Maybe your doctor recommended ABA services and you’re unsure if this is the right next step. That’s completely normal, many families feel the same way at the start!
Here are a few questions that might help guide your decision:
- Has your child been diagnosed with autism?
- Does your child struggle with social interactions, communication, play skills, or daily routines?
- Are there behaviors that interfere with learning, family activities, or going out into the community?
- Are transitions between activities or changes in routine difficult for your child?
- Do certain behaviors prevent your child from participating in daily routines such as going to the store, mealtime, or brushing teeth?
- Would your family benefit from guidance and support around behavior management or communication strategies at home?
If you answered yes to any of those, ABA may be a helpful next step to explore!
